You should also try to drive through the neighborhood at different times of day to get a feel of the place. Abidjan is a big city where you will face the same security threats you would face anywhere else. Always exercise caution, and remember to avoid displaying ostentatious signs of wealth. In order to protect yourself and your family, you should significantly raise your security awareness at your residence:

• Know your perimeter: Walls, gate, outside lighting, street access
• Know your home: doors, windows, locks, safe haven, alarm
• Private security companies are available for physical guarding and electronic monitoring
• Know who to call in case of emergency
• Brief your family members and housekeepers on security awareness and do give them the emergency numbers
