Moving around

Abidjan is large and somewhat sprawling so it is difficult for pedestrians to visit except in your own neighbourhood. Most of the roads are in good condition. However, this is not always the case, especially during the rainy season. The city is known for its traffic and traffic jams, mainly in the morning and at peak times in the evening. If you need to be at the office at 9am, you are advised to leave your home at 7.30am.

In recent years, in order to avoid traffic jams in Abidjan, the Ivorian government has invested heavily in infrastructure. Recent developments include a brand new asphalt highway connecting M'Badon to Abidjan, the opening of a viaduct linking one of the bridges to the highway, as well as other roads and bridges.

One of the latest achievements is the third bridge over the Ebrié lagoon, the Henri Konan Bedié Bridge (HKB), which is worthy of the most modern cities. The HKB bridge was officially inaugurated on 16/12/2014 in order to free the two previous ones from traffic jams - the Houphouët Boigny bridge (built in the 1950s) and the Charles de Gaulle bridge (built at the end of the 1960s). Most importantly, the new bridge saves drivers time as they do not need to drive around the lagoon and can now go directly to the east coast. Both the bridge and the motorway are new expressways linking the north and south of Abidjan, so the Riviera and Marcory districts are closer to each other. Despite this, there are regular traffic jams. Traffic jams are more important at the FHB bridge than the HKB bridge, which has a toll of between 500 FCFA and 3,000 FCFA...

Here are the three means of payment :
  1. The most common method is to pay cash at the toll booth - 500 CFA for a standard car. It is recommended to pay the exact amount or in small denominations.
  2. You can buy a PASS (BADGE) for at least 5000 CFA, you will be given a sticker to put on the back of your car. In this case, you will pass the toll through the "t" zone. To renew this pass, you must go to the HKB sales office. Please note that there is no discount with this pass, it is only more convenient.
  3. The last option is to buy a ticket from MTN Mobile Money or Flooz (Moov service) and dial 1355# as soon as you reach the barrier.
