OVERVIEW OF JACQUEVILLE'

History

Jacqueville was also formerly known as “Grand Jack” (was under the Dutch, Portuguese, British and French influence), this former trading post under the French colonization owes its name to an English trader, Big Jack, who had settled there to trade with the Indigenous people, including clothing and liqueur for palm oil, which is one of the main resources of the region, the original location of Grand Jack still exists, 5 km from the present town in the village of Bobo Ladja.

Separated from the mainland by the Vridi canal to the east and by the Bandama estuary to the west, this sandy island covered with coconut plantations, cut with some swamps and some remnants of forest, had glorious days in 19th century with the increase of the European demand for palm oil.
