The Goethe-Institut is a globally active, cultural institute of the Federal Republic of Germany. It has played a central role in carrying out Germanyâs foreign cultural and educational policy for more than 60 years.
It promotes instruction in German language abroad while cultivating international cultural collaboration. In addition, the Goethe-Institut projects a comprehensive image of Germany by providing information on Germanyâs cultural, social and political life. Current areas of emphasis in programme work are upon film, on exhibitions, and on seminars with topics of relevance to the host countryâs current situation. Beyond its activities in Abidjan and in CĂŽte dâIvoire, the Institut has the sub-regional mission of coordinating the activities of Goethe-Institute branches in Dakar, Accra, LomĂ©, Lagos and YaoundĂ©. The Institut hosts events of its own â in language and programme areas â in countries under its jurisdiction yet lacking Goethe-Institut branches of their own, particularly in Burkina Faso and soon in Mali as well.
